How to Succeed in a Phone Interview

Phone interviews are typically the first point of contact that you have with the company or recruiter and serve as a screening tool for the recruiter to learn more about you. Below are some tips for succeeding in a phone interview.

  1. Schedule a time that works for you. Ideally, this should be a time when you are able to be in a quiet, safe space with little distractions. You should not be driving or cooking dinner. You should be able to focus on the conversation with the company.
  2. Be prepared. Do your research on the company and market before your interview. Read more about the company and industry and come prepared with questions.
  3. Practice. Practice and review common interview questions and prepare your answers ahead of time. This will help you to feel more confident.
  4. Follow-up. Send a note to the recruiter or manager you spoke with via email post-interview. You should thank them for their time and express your interest in the role once more.
