Founding member, Dick Abbott, didn’t just start the industry’s first and only independent vegetation management company. He was instrumental in the development of the ANSI Z133 Tree Trimming Safety Standards through the American National Standards Institute — guidelines developed in response to incidents that occurred nationwide in the 1960s, and guidelines that have saved and protected countless lives since. His influence on safety in our industry will always be remembered.

Safety is at the heart of every single thing we do as a company, and it’s incredibly important to our organization that our people stay safe when they’re out in the field. To demonstrate the importance of safety in our work, ACRT Services developed the SAFE Program. Designed around eight principles, the SAFE program gives employees education and support to not only keep themselves safe in the field but also to ensure our customers and communities are kept safe as well.

SAFETY IS INTEGRATED THROUGHOUT OUR ORGANIZATION
360º WALK-AROUND
ACRT Services requires drivers of all company-owned vehicles to conduct a 360º walk-around before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Taking the time to walk completely around the vehicle tells the driver that there are no surprise hazards on the sides, behind, or even under the vehicle.
AREA SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES
The ACRT Safety Committee developed the Area Safety Representative (ASRs) designation to enhance employee participation in building a culture of safety and improving communication at all levels. ASRs must communicate safety initiatives and programs by distributing monthly metrics, leading review and discussion, assisting with safety stand-downs, providing incident investigation support, and leading safety tailboards with their groups. ASRs also attend and represent ACRT Services at contractor safety meetings and act as a first responder at an accident or incident scene by assisting coworkers in getting medical attention or getting home safely.
SMITH SYSTEM DRIVERS TRAINING
ACRT Services utilizes the Smith System drivers training program to ensure our people on the road are focused on safety at every turn. This program features a unique, hands-on approach to instill safety education techniques and behaviors that help to prevent accidents and save lives. As part of our new hire safety orientation, all field employees must complete courses in the Smith System E-Learning training program. We also use other modules — safe backing, proper following distance, and navigating dangerous intersections — to further enhance the safety knowledge of our employees.
BULLI RAY TRAINING
Bulli Ray is the industry leader in dog bite prevention. For many years, ACRT Services has used the Bulli Ray Occupational Dog Bite Safety training program to teach our team members how to work and stay safe around dogs they encounter in the field.
